Amstelsluice
Because of an increase of the total number of channels it became necessary to handle the refreshing frequency of the water. A major difference in the water level between the water from the lake Ij and the river Amstel, that of the lake being higher, forced the city council to construct the hydraulic system located in the 'inner-Amstel' the part of the river that runs after the sluice inside the city. With this system the water that periodically is let out of the lake into the city's channels, thus refreshing their water, is prevented from coming into the river and thus potentially flood it. The city had the privilege of having during the designing and constructing of this system Johannes Hudde, who had a great knowledge of mathematics, serving as Major. With the knowledge of mathematics he made a big contribution during the construction. Several years later after completion of the project, the lower parts at the north.Near the lake IJ were flooded several times. Shutting of the river Amstel caused this. The city council decided in the year 1681 to level up the Haarlemmerdyke and to construct several other sluices to prevent new floods. Johannes Dudde and Nicolaas Witsen managed this project.
