| Artis Royal Zoo. The official name is Natura Artis Magistra ("Nature is the Teacher of the Arts"). The oldest zoo in the Netherlands was founded in 1838. More than 700 species of animals can be found in an area of 14 hectares. The same area houses also, a natural-history museum, a planatarium, an aviary and an aquarium. The aquarium houses approx. 500 species of fresh and saltwater species. The zoo is open from Oct.-May, daily 9-5; June-Sept., daily 9-6. The address is Plantage Kerklaan 38-40. |
