| The Eastern Docklands |
|
| The Eastern Docklands were developed between 1874 and 1927 and consist of artificial peninsulas. Passenger and cargo ships left to the former Dutch East and West Indies, the Americas and Africa. Since 1876 the North Sea Canal offered a direct connection with the North See. The harbour florished, especially in the years between the two World Wars. After the Second World War the decay of the Eastern Docklands started. Passengers and mixed cargo was replaced by container and bulk transport and a new port west of Amsterdam took over its status of major port. Since the seventies the Eastern Docklands were transformed from a harbour site to a highly popular residential area with superb and diverse architecture. |
