| Montelbaanstower |
|
| This tower is assembled from two parts. The first and lower one was intended to be a part of the city's eastern defence line although in fact it never served as a defence tower. A few years after the completion of this first structure a bell-tower with a clock was added on top of it. There are many theories as to how the tower got its name. According to the most likely, there was at one time close to the location that the tower was later build a house with a sign on it, on which was written "The tower of Montelbaan". This house which is described in the, popular in the middle ages and for a period afterwards, book "The four Heems children", was according to this theory the inspiration for the name of the tower. |
