| During the expansion of Amsterdam in the year 1613, the Heeren-, Keizers- and Prinsen- canals were designed and build. Besides each of these canals an open square was situated. The squares were called Heerenmarket, Keizersmarket and Prinsenmarket. The Heerenmarket kept its original name. The Westermarket and Noordermarket were named after the creation of the Noorderchurch and Westerchurch.
A major part of the square is taken by the Noorderchurch build by the design of Hendrik de Keyser. The history of the Noordermarket dates back from the seventeenth century, a collection of various products was presented. Nowadays you can find on Saturday’s a traditional market with fresh and healthy natural organic products from farmers. |
